Dyson has yet again tried to surprise its fans. The vacuum company has ventured into the world of audio devices with the announcement of Dyson Zone, a pair of over-ear headphones that comes with an extra feature. After spending both time and money, Dyson has built its air purification technology into the headphones to lessen the rising air and noise pollution many of us are experiencing on a daily basis.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Dyson Zone air-purifying headphones, from release date and pricing to what the new hybrid headphones offer.
Hands-On Dyson Zone
So, what is it that makes the Dyson Zone headphones so unique?
As we’ve alluded to, it’s the first pair of headphones to combine audio with air purification, with the bid to tackle air and noise pollution for those on-the-go, particularly those in cities where noise and pollution are constantly on the rise.
In terms of design, the cans themselves look fairly standard – though with Dyson design flare and a grille similar to that present on the Dyson Hot & Cool air purifying fan.
This is so that each can, in addition to holding the headphone technology, has a mini air purifying system that can remove particles as small as 0.1 microns from the air and can absorb up to 2.5 liters of dirty air each second. In tests with the almost similar H1N1 virus, Dyson claims that it should also filter out Covid-19 particles in the air, giving users additional piece of mind.
It’ll also protect from gases including nitrogen dioxide, Sulphur dioxide and ground-level ozone, not usually filtered by standard air purifying tech.
A visor that magnetically attaches to the headphones then directs the cleaned air to your mouth and nose. You can browse air quality data, among other things, on the My Dyson app, which also lets you operate the cans’ various features and change their audio equalizer settings.
The headphones aren’t permanently attached to the visor. Instead, it magnetically latches into place, and there’s a separate “conversation mode” that lets you pull the visor down to talk to anyone in the area. Once dumped, it will also turn down the fans and turn on a transparency mode so you can hear everything well.
The battery life isn’t as impressive, lasting 1.5 to 4.5 hours depending on the level of air filtration you choose. Fortunately, they perform better when used as regular headphones, lasting 50 hours on a single charge. However, the charge time isn’t quite as quick; according to Dyson, a full charge takes about 3 hours.
Dyson originally committed to release them in Fall 2022 at its initial reveal in March 2022, though the company confirmed in early December 2022 that the release had slipped to 2023. Dyson confirmed in December 2022 that the Dyson Zone headphones will start at USD$949.
